Fort Médoc

Built from 1689 to 1721 by order of Louis XIV to “lock” the estuary with the Citadel of Blaye and Fort Pâté, and thus prohibit any enemy fleet from sailing on the Gironde, the Médoc Fort is a Vauban-style military monument with a history that is as “tormented” as it is fascinating.
Here, there is no massive enclosure because the Fort, against all expectations, was designed... on an area of wet meadows!

An improbable construction, therefore, which reveals its defensive system and all the ingenuity of Vauban and his engineers as we gradually understand the meticulous plan on which the various buildings were distributed.

Technical and financial constraints, deplorable sanitary conditions, political quarrels and successive abandonments punctuate the history of the Fort for more than 3 centuries.
