The Citadelle of Blaye, a lookout point over the estuary
Just a few kilometres from Lacanau and accessible by boat from the Médoc port of Lamarque, the Citadelle de Blaye is a breathtaking lookout point over the Estuary! Together with Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc, it forms the famous Verrou Vauban, a jewel of historic architecture listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
The Vauban lock
A concentrate of the estuary’s history
Leave your car at Lamarque and enjoy the breathtaking view from the water of this incredible military fortress. In the 17th century, the architect Jean-Baptiste Vauban was commissioned by the King himself to strengthen the fortifications at Blaye, a potential enemy gateway across the estuary. But also, it seems, to keep an eye on the people of Bordeaux, who had a reputation for rebellion! The Citadelle de Blaye was built in 1689 and retained its military role until the 20th century. A fascinating tour of its underground passages with a guide from the Tourist Office will remind you, for example, that it was a prison for the impetuous Duchesse Du Berry, and a place of occupation and then of Resistance during the Second World War.
Visit to the Citadelle of Blaye
Several options
Access to the now verdant citadel is free all year round. Behind the ramparts, the narrow streets invite you to take a stroll, and there are shops where you can eat in the serene, rural atmosphere of this former defensive site. You can also enhance your discovery by opting for a fascinating themed guided tour with an expert if you’re a history buff, an unusual escape game in the underground passages or a self-guided treasure hunt with the kids to learn while having fun.
The diary in Blaye
Numerous events, such as the Printemps des Vins de Blaye, the Marathon de Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux and the Jumping International de Blaye, are also organised throughout the year to combine festivities and heritage.
Shall we take a cruise?
Along the estuary
For a total immersion in the work of the genius Vauban, the Tourist Office and the Cie des 2 Rives offer a cruise in the afternoons from June to September to discover the Verrou Vauban. The programme includes a visit to the underground passages of the Blaye Citadel, followed by a guided boat trip to the islands of the Estuary and the assault on Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc. After returning to the Blaye nautical centre, you can easily drive to the port of Lamarque and the Médoc Atlantique.
