Marais du Conseiller
The Marais du Conseiller: a haven of unspoilt nature in Le Verdon-sur-Mer
Located in Verdon-sur-Mer, the Marais du Conseiller extends over more than 600 hectares, offering a mosaic of natural landscapes worthy of a small Camargue. This vast area, where water is omnipresent, is distinguished by its salt ponds, once used for salt production and now converted to the cultivation of prawns and oysters, as well as its wet meadows where cows and horses graze peacefully.
A unique, open landscape
The marshes of Le Conseiller are characterised by a very open landscape, with almost no hedges or trees, giving way to a vast expanse of meadows and stagnant water. Water is the central feature here, winding its way through large pools, small ponds and channels that form a complex, untamed network. This wetland is home to a multitude of rich and varied ecosystems, home to exceptional species of flora and fauna.
A paradise for migratory birds
Situated on the route of avian migrations, the Marais du Conseiller is a veritable refuge for many species of bird. Whether they're here for a seasonal stopover or to make a permanent home for themselves, birds find the marshes an ideal haven of peace. Birdwatchers will be able to observe emblematic species such as waders, birds of prey and even wild ducks, who have come to take advantage of the richness of this flooded area.
Remarkable biological diversity
The biodiversity of the Marais du Conseiller is not limited to birds. There is also an impressive variety of plants adapted to wetlands, which help to maintain the ecological balance of this area. The meadows, which are regularly flooded, are home to grasses and flowers specific to wetlands, while the ponds and pools are ideal habitats for aquatic species such as frogs, dragonflies and numerous fish.
Ecological and educational management
The marsh is now under the protection of the Curuma/CPIE Médoc association, which is working to preserve this remarkable natural area. Through its sustainable management actions, the association is helping to preserve this fragile environment while offering the public an educational introduction to the marsh. Guided tours are offered in season, giving visitors a better understanding of the importance of wetlands, their role in local biodiversity and the interactions between man and his environment.
Immerse yourself in a preserved ecosystem
Whether you're a nature lover, a birdwatcher or simply curious to discover a wild natural area, the Marais du Conseiller is a natural area to discover in Médoc Atlantique.
