The splendour of the lakes
A haven of peace
The lakes of the Médoc Atlantique are true havens of peace, nestling in the heart of unspoilt countryside. Ideal for a relaxing break, they offer an exceptional setting in which to recharge your batteries with family and friends. From refreshing swims to kayaking, paddle boarding and freshwater fishing, these peaceful stretches of water are perfect for enjoying the pleasures of nature to the full. Bordered by pine forests and shady paths, they also invite you to go hiking and picnicking in the heart of nature, for an authentic getaway between lake and greenery.
Hourtin-Carcans Lake
Lake of Hourtin-Carcans is the largest natural freshwater lake in France. Ideal for sailing, paddle-boarding or just a refreshing swim, it has eight supervised beaches. On the west side, you’ll discover the pretty village of Piqueyrot in Hourtin and the famous Bombannes estate. Just a few pedal strokes from the centre of Carcans-Maubuisson and you’ll arrive at the Bombannes estate, managed by the ONF.
Lacanau lake
With its 2,000 hectares, the lake offers a wide range of water sports and charming little beaches. Le Moutchic is the liveliest spot, with its many “beach huts” where you can try your hand at stand-up paddle, canoeing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing and even e-foil !
Preserved natural areas
Ecological wealth
Médoc Atlantique is home to three classified Nature Reserves and lush green spaces, providing a haven for wildlife and an oasis for walkers.
Étang de Cousseau National Nature Reserve
One of the oldest National Nature Reserves in the South-West, Cousseau takes you to the heart of the original Landes forest. Accessible by bike or on foot, it can be visited throughout the year and the seasons, because it doesn’t look the same in winter as it does in summer…
The Vire Vieille and Batejin Managed Biological Reserve
Situated to the south-east of Lac de Lacanau, it remains a mystery to many people, even some local residents. However, to discover the biotope (or at least part of it), all you have to do is walk the very accessible Sentier de la Berle, on the most northerly part of the Reserve.
The Dunes and Marshes of Hourtin Nature Reserve
This is one of the largest sensitive natural areas in the region. It gives you the chance to find out more about all the different types of environment you can encounter here: coastal dunes, protective oak forests and marshy hinterland on the shores of the lake. The best part of all is the many hiking trails that dot the Reserve!
Meet the locals…
Like no other
As you walk along the shores of the lakes in the Médoc, you’ll learn all about the history of the marshes and find out everything you need to know about the lives of otters, wild boar, herons and kingfishers. And depending on the season, you won’t necessarily be dealing with the same person…
Once summer arrives, try to admire the lazy dance of the European Cistude : this tortoise loves to nap in the sun to keep warm. But be discreet, as it doesn’t like to be disturbed or even observed too closely while sunbathing. The best spot ? Without doubt the Lagune de Contaut in Hourtin.
As the days begin to shorten and autumn begins to set in, nature witnesses a sight as rare as it is precious: the bellowing of the stag. This is the moment chosen by the males to demonstrate their virility, in order to conquer the status of breeder and thus ensure their descendants…
As soon as temperatures drop in northern Europe, the cranes begin their winter migration southwards, and find a certain happiness in the Médoc. They find shelter here at night, but also a veritable larder in the surrounding farmland during the day. This gives rise to daily flights back and forth, marked by the V-shaped flight system and accompanied by their distinctive call, which can be heard up to three kilometres away !
