Circuit de la Chapelle
Set off to explore the commune of Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, formerly an island nestled in the Gironde estuary, and discover a region rich in history and biodiversity. Along the trails, be amazed by the local wildlife, including the green lizard (Lacerta viridis) and the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), a shy aquatic turtle. This walk is suitable for everyone, with no difficulty or elevation gain, and offers an immersion in both history and nature. Along the way, explore the archaeological site of “La Chapelle Saint-Siméon”, where you can admire a life-size model reconstructing the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple, a funerary church and the chapel. Discovered in 2000 during agricultural work and developed since 2016, this site offers a journey into the heart of local history. Your route will also take you through the meadows and mattes – land shaped by man to control the waters of the estuary – before you cross the hamlet and reach the Port de Goulée.
