Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin
The Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin: an unspoilt jewel on the Atlantic coast
Located in the heart of the Médoc Atlantique, the Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin covers more than 2,150 hectares, offering a diversity of landscapes typical of the sandy coast of Aquitaine. Listed since 2009, this reserve is home to an exceptional natural heritage and provides a haven for a multitude of animal and plant species.
An area of dunes, marshes and forests
The Reserve boasts a mosaic of preserved natural environments, ranging from vast sandy beaches to coastal dunes, maritime pine and holm oak forests, wetlands and the magnificent Lac d'Hourtin. This unique site encapsulates the very essence of the Aquitaine landscape, offering visitors a total immersion in the wilderness of the Atlantic coast.
A biodiversity sanctuary in need of protection
Managed by the Office National des Forêts (ONF), the Reserve is subject to rigorous scientific monitoring to preserve its remarkable biodiversity. Among the emblematic species, the European otter, the kingfisher and the green tree frog find refuge in these wetlands. As for the plants, the Royal Ferns, majestic ferns, adorn the paths and delight botany enthusiasts.
In an effort to protect these fragile ecosystems, strict regulations are in place. Visitors are asked to respect these rules to preserve the reserve's ecological balance. Before your visit, check with the Médoc Atlantique Tourist Offices to find out which areas are accessible and the best practices to follow.
