Cultural discoveries : a heritage to explore
Soulac villas
Soulac-sur-Mer is rich in historical and architectural heritage. Don’t miss the Soulac Villas tour, a walk that immerses you in the elegance of the Belle Époque. The “five hundred villas” of red brick and colourful woodwork are an integral part of the charm of yesteryear and create the harmony of this typical late-19ᵉ century resort. In fact, it was thanks to the sea-bathing craze that the town attracted its first visitors, and it was during the period from 1860 to 1890 that the first villas were built. The arrival of the railway in 1874, with the “train des plaisirs”, enabled the seaside resort to take off.
The basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres
The basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts. The museums and exhibitions organised in the region will also enrich your cultural immersion.
The bunkers
And let’s not forget the open, sand-free bunkers just a stone’s throw from the town centre. But why are these bunkers here? They are the remains of the Atlantic Wall built during the Second World War to secure access to the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux and its submarine base.
Nature and walks
A rejuvenating escape
The unspoilt nature of Soulac-sur-Mer is an invitation to relax and explore. Walking and cycling trails, such as those on the Vélodyssée, take you through pine forests, dunes and unspoilt beaches. Families will particularly enjoy the walks by the ocean and the picnic areas in the heart of nature.
Market stroll
Covered market
The Soulac-sur-Mer market is a veritable institution! Under the neo-colonial-style covered market hall, in the heart of the old village, a multitude of flavours await you, whether you’re shopping with family or friends.
Night market
Medoc wines, local specialities, ready-made meals – the friendly atmosphere of the Soulac-sur-Mer night market is the perfect way to start the evening.
Gastronomic fair
Every summer, the Rue de la Plage in Soulac-sur-Mer is transformed into a veritable open-air market at the gastronomic fairs held in July and August. For several days, the pedestrianised street plays host to dozens of exhibitors showcasing the flavours of the region: wines, liqueurs, foies gras, charcuterie and other regional specialities delight the palates of gourmets and the curious.
