Talais, an unexpected interlude between estuary and marshland

Situated on the banks of the Gironde estuary, Talais is an unexpected interlude in the heart of the Médoc marshes. Take a stroll through the mattes, the land reclaimed from the water centuries ago, and you’ll find yourself immersed in the picturesque atmosphere of a former oyster-farming port with its charming white and blue huts! Linger on the terrace of one of the guinguettes and sample a Médoc oyster in the lush green surroundings. Then follow the bell tower of Saint-Martin church into the heart of the village. Here, a lively night market awaits you, adding to your discoveries the friendly, epicurean atmosphere typical of small Médoc villages.

The birth of the Médoc marshes

It’s hard to imagine today, but a large part of the Médoc was submerged not so long ago. Until the 17th century, Talais was an island lost between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. Take a stroll through the Médoc marshes to appreciate the special atmosphere of the mattes, the land reclaimed from the water by Dutch engineers. Since then, everything has been so green! The drained marshes have enabled agriculture and livestock farming to develop in the Médoc, and they are home to a particularly dense fauna and flora. An inter-municipal syndicate is responsible for their preservation, constantly ensuring that the water system functions properly.

Take the time to explore the marshes on the outskirts of Talais on one of two ready-to-go routes, which will ensure you don’t get lost and don’t miss out on any of the must-see sights of this charming town.

By bike, there’s a cycle path from the port to the Baluard oyster marsh, and a lookout point along the dyke on the edge of the estuary.

As you stroll along, you’ll see the steeple of the neo-Romanesque parish church of Saint-Martin looming in the distance. It will be your landmark on the way back to the village!

The old oyster-farming port on the Talais channel is one of the little-known nuggets of the Médoc Atlantique. In the middle of the marshes, you’d never expect to come across this charming fishing village, with its white and blue huts reminiscent of the Bay of Arcachon. And yet: historically, oysters have been produced in the salt marshes of the estuary for longer than in the open sea! One of the old huts houses a small museum, “Living Memory of the Port”, run by the Friends of Talais Heritage, with a remarkable collection of tools and accessories to tell you all about it.

The fishing huts of the Estuary

No, they don’t take their name from the eponymous fish, but from the square fishing net that you’ll see hanging from the end of these funny wooden huts on stilts at low tide. At high tide, the fishermen plunge the net into the caramel waters of the estuary to catch prawns and small fish.

The “carrelets” (small fishing nets) are a typical feature of the estuary, scattered along the shore like pebbles from a Little Thumb. Don’t you think they add to the tranquillity of your stroll along the water’s edge ?
