Surfing fans

And thrill-seekers!

Don’t be fooled by the apparent peace and quiet of Grayan-et-l’ Hôpital: there’ s plenty of room for thrills too, from motocross to the Gurp TT, or surfing on one of the wildest beaches in the Médoc Atlantique: Plage du Gurp. It’s a picture-postcard idyll. Far from the crowds, with the sound of the raging waves as your soundtrack, it’s a luxury to be alone in the world, in the heart of the Eden of Aquitaine… From the Gurp beach, once called Gurp-les-Pins by a handful of campers who found it at the end of a lane, the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall are now the pacifist canvas of graffiti artists. The panorama of the Anse du Gurp is exceptional, from the Plage de Dépée to the Pointe de la Négade, with the Cordouan lighthouse on the horizon .

The seal of Santiago de Compostela

A trip back in time during your holiday in Grayan-et-l’Hôpital

Where does this curious name come from? A long way back, as you might imagine… Originally, Grayan-et-L’Hôpital was made up of two separate parishes: Saint-Pierre-de-Grayan and Saint-Jean-l’Hôpital. The union of the two consecrated its name in the XIXᵉ century. Around this time, the chapel of ‘Saint-Jean-Baptiste de l’Hôpital’ was rebuilt in the village of l’Hôpital. The Templar cross at the top of the chapel is a clear reminder that it was built in the 12th century on the coastal route to Santiago de Compostela, where the Hospitaller Commandery welcomed pilgrims for medical treatment and gave its name to the village. Today, it continues to welcome pilgrims, offering both mass and cultural events.
