Château Escot

Halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, Château Escot takes full advantage
of the unique Médoc terroir, the jewel in the crown of the Bordeaux vineyards.
Planted in clay, sand and gravel, cooled by the ocean winds or, on the contrary,
protected and warmed by the heathland, its vines draw from the earth and sky the ideal conditions
for their development.
The current location of Château Escot has been developed since Gallo-Roman times. Its good soil
and the presence of a spring explain the attraction of this corner of the Médoc for man. Archaeological excavations
have uncovered relics from the Bronze Age dating back 1500 years
BC, as well as relics from more recent periods. These include a
flint scraper and ancient coins minted by the Romans, the Middle Ages, the Empire, etc.
All of which bear witness to the site's long and rich history.
Even the name ESCOT has its origins in the Middle Ages. In those days, the estate was home to one of the region's notables: the tax collector. “Escots” as they were called at the time. This function has not existed for a long time, but Château ESCOT is still proud of it today. It is one of the oldest wine estates in the Médoc. Vines have been cultivated there for 150 years.
As early as 1858, Monsieur d'Armailhac, a local dignitary and great wine lover, listed it among the “Crus Bourgeois”, a quality label born of a privilege granted by the British Crown to the bourgeoisie of Bordeaux. From the Middle Ages onwards, the latter were exempted from taxes on the local sale and export of their wines. This exemption prompted the richest families in Bordeaux to acquire the best land in the surrounding area. A fine terroir facilitating the work of the winegrower and the “Crus des Bourgeois” as they were then known eventually became a benchmark. So much so that even after the Revolution, when the privileges ended, the term was still used to refer to the excellent wines of the region.
In 1932, the popular expression became a legal term. For the sake of clarity, the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Agriculture published their first official classification of
Crus Bourgeois. A total of 444 wines were deemed worthy of this distinction, and Château ESCOT was one of them.
90 years later, after changing hands several times, the estate was bought by two Czech friends who are passionate about wine and who have worked hard to restructure and expand the vineyard by acquiring plots of land in an exceptional gravelly terroir in the commune of Saint-Christoly.
They have also undertaken a huge project to rebuild the technical buildings and renovate the château so that it becomes a charming and refined home for all our guests.
