Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac
Quite a story!
Why the long name ?
This village near the estuary was created by the merger of three parishes: Saint-Pierre-de-Jau, Saint-Pierre-de-Dignac and Saint-Romain-de-Loyrac. After the revolution, in 1791, the three parishes merged to form a single commune, whose name had to be chosen without making anyone jealous! However, the parochial spirit lasted until 1852, with the chapels of each former parish continuing to ring their bells in their own corner according to the events of local life. Nearly 100 years later, it was the united bells of Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac that rang out across the Médoc at the end of the Second World War.
TO THE VILLAGE’S ANCIENT ORIGINS…
The village is also home to the Chapelle Saint-Siméon archaeological site, discovered during agricultural work in 2000. From the footbridge built in 2016, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the ancient foundations of this Gallo-Roman temple. A small model will give you a precise idea of what it looked like in Antiquity, and explanatory panels tell you about the remains of a funerary church and the chapel of Saint-Simon, which gave its name to the site.

Richard’s Lighthouse

It was built when the shipping channel ran close to the Gironde coast. The Richard lighthouse has not been in operation since the 1950s, but it does house a fascinating museum of estuarine life: discover how fishing, sailing and oyster farming have shaped the culture and traditions of the Médoc.
