From place de l'église to digue de l'herbe
1Start off on rue du 8 mai 1945, next to the Mairie (town hall), walk past the church then turn left towards Goulée on the D102E2 to reach the Chemin de Picon, a tarmac road that runs for 600m. Take the 1st path called "la digue de l'herbe", also on the left. Continue for 1.6km. On this walk, you may be lucky enough to spot coypu (musk beaver), otters, wild ducks, grey herons, egrets, etc.

From the Hontane to the tons of ducks
2Cross the Route de la Hontane and walk along the dyke for 900m. You are in the middle of the marshes and you can see the tons, a typical habitat for duck hunting. These small installations are found in wetlands used for hunting waterfowl. This traditional practice, dating back to the 19th century, involves hiding in this shelter while waiting for your prey. Decoys are strategically placed on the water to attract the attention of wild geese and ducks.

Chemin des hirondelles to route des déportés
3At the next junction, turn right. Follow this gravel path for another 800m until you reach a tarmac road (chemin des hirondelles et de Larnac). Go as far as the stop sign, turn left (route des Déportés Internés) and 100m further on the right take the white track by the calvary.

From the vines to the Méric cross
4Then walk through the vineyards for 500m, keeping to the right, to reach the Chemin de Laubespin. Turn left, and the route continues for 500m on a tarmac road through a hamlet to the Croix de Méric.

From Rue de la Gravière to Moulin de Catala
5Cross over to take the route de la gravière for 200m (you can extend the walk by a further 3km), going straight on to return via loop 2), then turn left along the route des volatiles towards the village for 400m. On your right, look out for the ruins of the Catala mill !

6Turn left into rue des Platanes and immediately right into chemin du fournil. After 200m, you are back at your starting point.

The church of Saint-Hilaire
A charming little church built in 1896 by Lesparre-born architect Bonnore. It replaced the Romanesque church dating from the 12th century, which has now been demolished. The remaining stones were used to rebuild the present church. The bells have also been preserved. It was inaugurated in 1901.

The marshes
It all began in the 17th century with the work carried out by the Flemish to drain the marshes. Dykes and channels were cleared, sending rainwater from the land towards the estuary. This work enabled the village to develop, with the transport of goods such as linseed oil, wool, paper, draperies and flour. Flour was the product of more than twenty mills, some of which can still be seen in the commune.
