Founded in 1099, the church of Carcans was the seat of a priory until the 13th century. At that time, it was established as a parish. Carcans was a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela from Saintonge. As a souvenir, the church has a magnificent statue of Saint James in pilgrim's costume dating from the 17th century and classified as a historical monument. The present church was built in 1870 in the neo-gothic style; the altar, from the same period, is in polychrome marble. The choir organ, of German manufacture, was installed in 1971 during the restoration of the church.
