The Cordouan lighthouse is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, it is the only lighthouse on the French coast still manned, the oldest still in operation and the only one in the world open to visitors. An absolutely unique site, it offers an exceptional view of the Royannais and Médoc coasts as a reward for climbing the 301 steps that lead up to the lantern. Its classification as a Historic Monument in 1862, the same year as Notre-Dame de Paris, speaks volumes about the beauty of its architecture, treated like that of a castle. The rocky islet on which it rests, entirely covered at each high tide, shelters an environment rich in numerous plant and animal species. At low tide, the guardians welcome visitors, who are invited to discover this magical world. Without doubt, an unforgettable experience. As the lighthouse is in the middle of the ocean, it is necessary to use maritime transport to get there.
