Grayan-et-l'Hôpital

The history of Grayan-et-l'Hôpital

Originally Grayan-et-L'Hôpital was composed of two separate parishes: Saint-Pierre-de-Grayan and Saint-Jean-l'Hôpital. The two villages were united in the 19th century. The village of l'Hôpital was a welcoming stopover for pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela, who landed at Soulac-sur-Mer and were taken care of by the religious order of the Hospitallers.

Its chapel "Saint-Jean-Baptiste de l'Hôpital", rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, has been revived in recent years by the association of the Friends of the Chapel of Saint Jean-Baptiste de l'Hôpital, which organises visits and cultural events. In the cemetery of Grayan, there is an ancient tomb, that of the Renjaire, in Occitan "arranger", a healer who was famous in the Médoc and is still part of local customs and popular beliefs.

In the cemetery of Grayan, lies Bob Denard, tireless mercenary and fighter, author of several coups d'état in many African countries.

Situated on the "historic route" of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Grayan-et-l'Hôpital also offers a wealth of walking opportunities. The 3 walking associations in the commune will be able to guide you (GR la Pointe, Les Chemins Partagés, Safari Médoc)!

The Gurp beach

A BEACH IN ITS WILD STATE

An unmissable place : at the end of a path leading to the ocean, some campers in the fifties discovered this place, formerly called "Gurp les Pins". Its calm and wild atmosphere and its long sandy beach make it an ideal place for holidaymakers. Another specificity of this spot: the Gurp esplanade, its Belvedere, its observation benches overlooking the beach and the bunkers, remains of the Atlantic Wall, which have been painted by local artists. Discover a magnificent view of the Gurp cove, from the Dépée beach to the Négade point, with the Cordouan lighthouse on the horizon.

You will find shops open in season: restaurants, boutiques, services and leisure activities.
