The Eden of Aquitaine is made up of beaches of fine sand as far as the eye can see, and the ocean beach at Hourtin is no exception. A pathway above the dune leads to the central beach, peaceful and authentic. Supervised in summer, it’s a perfect spot for swimming with the kids! To make the most of the wild Atlantic coastline, a second beach with lifeguard surveillance in high season is accessible as you head south.
Surfing is obviously part of Hourtin’s culture, with numerous surf schools offering courses for all levels. It’s never too early or too late to tease the waves of the Médoc…

If its waters weren’t so peaceful, it would be hard to believe that this is a lake! A paradise for families, but also for groups of friends keen on water sports or lovers looking for a place to co-coon alone in the world, Lac d’Hourtin is a blessing. There’s no pressure to practice stand-up paddle, sailing, kitesurfing, pedal-boating or canoeing, but you can also relax and enjoy an impromptu picnic between swims at the delightful Piqueyrot harbour, at the gateway to the Nature Reserve. Before rushing off to Île aux Enfants and its playground !
Discovering the wild and unspoilt nature of Hourtin
The 2150-hectare Dunes and Marshes of Hourtin Nature Reserve encompasses all the landscapes of Aquitaine’s sandy coast: foreshore, wooded and bare dunes, mixed forest, lake shores and marshes. It’s a protected natural setting for wonderful walks to discover the fauna and flora of Hourtin. At its heart lies the Contaut Lagoon, a sensitive natural area ideal for family walks. Its educational trail guides budding explorers, as do the naturalists from the ONF, with whom we recommend you schedule a themed visit.
